Texas Pride

What makes Texas so, by God, different? If you have ever been anywhere outside of Texas, you know Texas is not like any other place. I have never seen any other state that displays or shows off its pride as Texas does. How many blocks can you go before you see the next Texas flag or mailbox painted like the state flag? Why do you think that is?

In researching for the book, Texas In Her Own Words, I found several causes for the deep-rooted nationalism that permeates Texas . I also think the state flag easily lends itself to symbolism. The colors are essentially the same as the national flag, “Old Glory.” Texas has some unique profiles to use to exhibit this pride. There are the shapes of Texas, the Alamo , longhorns, stars, boots and others. Just plug in the colors in the flag pattern and you’re showing your Texas pride.

Can you name another state that has ice cube trays, tortilla chips, frying pans and swimming pools shaped like the state? Naw, I didn’t think so. It seems that almost anything that can be sold can be shaped like Texas . Also, have you noticed that all the major car manufacturers have “Texas Editions” or packages? Do other states have those? Heck, one truck maker even has a model named after a Texas ranch--the King Ranch.

All this tells me Texas is hot from a marketing standpoint. The manufacturers are selling to that Texan pride. It’s like anything marked “ Texas or Texan” will be bought by Texans. Hey, they know a good thing when they see it.

Tell me, what is the strangest thing you have ever seen as far Texans showing their Texas pride or Texaness? Share your thoughts with me at Tweed@TejasCommunications.com. I’d love to hear from you. Tell me what you think.

Speaking of Texas...Getting Started

Texas is special. There isn’t another place like it anywhere.

I’ve written a book about Texas called, Texas In Her Own Words. It started as a lark, became an obsession and finally, my master. Ultimately, it was a labor of love. I’ve always loved Texas but after writing the book and meeting people from every point of the Lone Star, I possess a deeply rooted passion for this place we call home.

Just to set the record straight right up front. I’m not a native. I was born Yankee (NOT a Yankee fan). I joined the U.S. Navy to see the world and left for boot camp the morning after high school graduation almost 40 years ago. Within months, I found myself stationed at the Naval Auxiliary Air Station in Kingsville, Texas. Honestly, it was culture shock for this boy from Laconia, New Hampshire. I quickly began to appreciate my surroundings. Texas just grows on you. I’ve always been enamored with the “can do” attitude that is pervasive everywhere you look in Texas.
The book is simply a peek into the Texas psyche. It goes a long way to explain why Texans are the way they are. Several traits that Texans share mold them into the people they are. They can’t help it. They can’t explain it. It’s just who they are. But this whole “Texas Attitude” thing didn’t happened by mistake. Frankly, some of it was manufactured by design. You might not want to hear that but it is fact.
I would like to engage you in a conversation about Texas and what makes it special. Why is this place unique? I bet you have an opinion. Share it with me at Tweed@TejasCommunications.com I will tell you this much; in doing the research for this book I found that Texas is very personal and it doesn’t mean the exact same thing to any two people. What does it mean to you? Let me hear from you and let’s speak about Texas.
